A Ghanaian Member of Parliament Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has entreated foreign diplomats not to impose their countries’ culture on the people of his country.

The opposition MP of Asawase in the Ashanti Region warned in a radio interview.

According to Muntaka Mubarak, some foreign diplomats have taken entrenched position on the ongoing debate on the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021.

The MP noted that though the bill is still before parliament yet key proponents of the bill are been threatened by some Western diplomats.

The legislator said no amount of threats from foreign interest will induce MPs into accepting wrong socio-cultural values in Ghana.

He further warned that any embassy that refuses opposition MP a visa on grounds of cultural values particularly on the LQBTQ+ will be closed down.

The MP’s comments follows CNN’s Larry Meadow’s interview with the lead MP for the bill, Sam George Dzata on the subject. In the said interview, the CNN host was perceived to be asking the MP questions that are twisted towards foreign dictates.

The Speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament Alban Bagbin also advised diplomats threatening advocate of the bill to respect the cultural values of the country.

“We will not threaten any person but we shall also not be threatened. All those threatening our members of parliament who are leading this LGBTQ+ bill, please be warned. We cannot be threatened in our backyard. This must be stated loud and clear.” the Speaker of Parliament stressed.
