Oti Region: 22 persons hospitalized in suspected food poisoning ailments.

About 22 people have been hospitalized in a suspected food poisoning incident over the weekend.

The victims were rushed to the hospitals with symptoms of food poisoning symptoms after eating food served at a funeral.

The incident occurred at Agou, a farming community in the Nkwanta South district in the Oti Region of Ghana.

Myjoyonline report cited by Africa Express has it that the victims suffered symptoms of acute diarrhea and vomiting after eating food served at the said funeral on Sunday.

According to the source, 13 of the victims are on admission at the Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital whereas nine are receiving treatment at the Saint Joseph Hospital in Nkwanta.

Nursing officer at the St. Joseph Catholic Hospital said none of the patients was in critical condition at the time they showed up at the facility.

Authorities are yet to identify the exact food that they were served at the funeral that has caused the ailment since different foods and drinks were served.

It is reported that some of the victims were served rice, banku, meat, porridge and locally brewed drink, pito.

Medical Superintendent of the Nkwanta Municipal Hospital, Dr. Theophilus Amoatey disclosed that the victims were responding to treatment.

He explained that the patients visited the facility with complaints of vomiting and diarrhea.

He told the media that samples of the patients have been taken for laboratory examination.

He further disclosed that a disease control team has been dispatched to the Agou community for grounds assessment and investigation.
