Citing standing order 18 of parliament in accordance with the Article 97 G and H of the country’s constitution, the speaker said ” those Mps cannot be allowed by law and my good self to continue to pretend to be representing people that they don’t believe in and don’t have any loyalty for in this house any longer.”

Ghana’s Parliament after the 2020 General Elections became hanged as both major political parties did not obtain absolute majority in parliament. Both parties had 137 seats each with one Independent joing the New Patriotic Party making their seats 138, a slim majority for the ruling party.
This ruling will brings the ruling party to 134 seats while the opposition party also has 136 now.

Reacting the ruling of the speaker of Parliament, the now
Minority has indicated that it will seek constitutional interpretation from the country’s Supreme court.”We are going to further litigate. We have a process at the court ,” the now minority leader,Alexander Afenyo Ma rkin hinted.
He further indicated that his side will follow up with the court and “if the court makes the pronouncement, we will respect the orders of the court.”
According to the country’s constitution ,any member of parliament who leaves his party to join another party in parliament vacates his seat.
