Former Rwandan Police Chief is facing trial in France for his involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

If found guilty as being charged, Laurent Bucyibaruta will spend his remaining years in prison.

The former Southern Gikongoro region( now Nyamagabe region) Police Chief is standing trial in Paris for the murder of thousands of Tutsis by the Hutu ethnic group in Rwanda.

Laurent Bucyibaruta 78, is facing charges of genocide, complexity in genocide and crimes against humanity.

Ex-Chief Bucyibaruta is cited as the leader among 75 other suspects who masterminded mass murder of Tutsis under false pretexts.

Bacyibaruta’s name has been inscribed on a granite slab as number one suspect in the Murambi Genocide Memorial garden.

It is alleged that the former police chief supervised the 1994 ethnic cleansing together with a group militants and local politicians in his region of command.

Bucyibaruta has been directly linked to the Murambi Technical College killings.

The ex- officer is also fingered in the murder of 90 Tutsi students of Kibeha Secondary School, as well as execution of Gikongoro prison inmates.

On accounts of the Murambi massacre, victims were told they would be well protected in organized group in a single location.

They were assured of secure shelter, food and water supply.

After successfully luring them into a school, the dessidents cut off water supply to the facility and denied victims food.

They were then attacked and killed since they were too weak to defend themselves.

The Genocide Archive of Rwanda estimates that bout 50,000 Tutsis were slaughtered in Murambi.

Only 34 of the victims managed to survive.

Survivors have identified Laurent Bucyibaruta as the architect of the gruesome massacre.

Laurent Bucyibaruta is the first topmost Rwandan officer to be tried in France in connection with the 1994 genocide that took place in Rwanda.

It is estimated that over 800,000 Tutsis and and some Hutus lost their lives in the ethnic conflict that lasted a little over 100 days.
