Lady Kenyatta lauds Athletics Kenya for using sports to promote Climate awareness

First Lady of Kenya, Lady Margaret Kenyatta has commended her national athletics team for using sporting discipline to promote Climate awareness.

Lady Kenyatta professed her admiration when Athletics Kenya presented a United Nations replica athletics relay baton to her.

She received the baton from Jackson Tuwei, President of Athletics Kenya last Wednesday at the State House in Nairobi.

The First Lady was presented with the replica relay baton for her role as Patron for the 2021 World U20 Athletics Championship Patron.

Kenya’s Sports CS, Amina Mohammed said the baton was given to Athletics Kenya for onward presentation to the First Lady of Kenya.

Amina Mohammed reveal the team received the baton after signing the United Nations Framework Conversation on Climate Change( UNFCCC) in August last year.

She indicated that the United Nations presented the replica baton in recognition for Kenya’s environmental conservation commitments and athletics excellence.

Amina further explained it is also to acknowledge Kenya as the global destination for green sports.

The First Lady expressed gratitude to Athletics Kenya and the Kenyan Ministry for being the first World Athletics Federation to ratify the NUFCCC.

Margaret Kenyatta commended Kenyan athletes for raising the flag of the country high at global stage through sports.

She was delighted that her people influenced global call for Climate Action during the 2021 World U20 Athletics Championship held in Kenya.

The Kenyan First Lady said is an honour for Athletics Kenya to lead the Nation in the Climate Action campaign.

She argued Kenya has created a legacy for World Athletics U20 Championships in partnership with UNEP and the Stockholm Environment Institute.

She said Athletics Kenya’s climate actions response is in tune with her “Beyond Zero” initiative.

Lady Kenyatta reiterated commitment to protect the health of the vulnerable societies of Kenya through support for the World Athletics Air Quality project.

First Lady Margaret Kenyatta dedicated the signing of the UNFCC in honour of Kenya’s Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, late Professor Wangari Maathai, for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.
