The Republic of South Africa and Mozambique have come out with explanations on why the two countries abstained from the UN General Assembly votes on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

This was disclosed in a joint communique issued during a Working Visit by His Excellency, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of the Republic of Mozambique, to South Africa on 11 March 2022.

Filipe Jacinto Nyusi was in South Africa at the invitation of President Ramaphosa for bilateral talks.

In the communique, the two Heads of State confirmed precision of the two countries’ decision on the subject.

President Ramaphosa and H.E. President Nyusi indicated the resolution was not grounded on balanced assessment of the fundamental causes of the conflict, hence their decision to abstain from voting.

President Ramaphosa and Jacinto Nyusi expressed concern over the increasing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

The duo on that note called on mediators to adopt balanced approach to the conflict.

The Presidents recommend dialogue as the best alternative to address the security concerns of both countries.

They called on the United Nations Security Council to allow the United Nations Secretary General to initiate dialogue between Russia and Ukraine.

President Ramaphosa and his Mozambique counterpart called for urgent reform in the United Nations Security Council.

On related issue, President Ramaphosa  endorsed Mozambique’s bid to serve as a nonpermanent member on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the year 2022/23.
